About the Temple

In the quiet farming village of Nelluvaya, roughly midway between Thrissur and Guruvayur, stands one of the few temples in Kerala dedicated to Dhanwantari – the form of Vishnu who rose from the churning of the ocean carrying the pot of nectar, and who is honoured as the lord of medicine. The idol, about four feet tall and carved in black stone, holds the conch and discus in its rear hands, the pot of amrita in one front hand and a leech, the physician's old companion, in the other. The sanctum is a round, single-storeyed stone structure with a copper roof, and the deity faces west.

People come here for health as much as for darshan. The temple's daily prasadam, called mukkudi, is an Ayurvedic preparation made under the supervision of a traditional physician family, and Ayurveda students, practitioners and patients visit before beginning a course of study or treatment. Tradition links the west-facing Dhanwantari of Nelluvaya with the east-facing Guruvayoorappan some twenty kilometres away, picturing the two as looking towards each other.

History & Aithihyam

Tradition says the villagers of Nelluvaya once carved an image of Dhanwantari from the stone of a nearby hill and prepared to install it. Before the ceremony two radiant boys appeared – believed to be the Ashwini Devas, the physicians of the gods – and pointed out a far holier idol lying close by. That image was installed as the main deity, and the villagers' own carving was given a place as Cheruthevar, the 'small lord', who is worshipped as Mahavishnu. Devotees believe the main idol is of immense age and was once worshipped by Vasudeva and Devaki, the parents of Krishna.

Another tradition tells of the Kuttanchery Moos family of Ayurvedic physicians: an elder of the family is said to have cured the Zamorin of a stubborn stomach ailment after a year of prayer at this temple, and to this day each heir of the family is said to spend forty-one days in worship here after completing his medical studies. The daily mukkudi prasadam is prepared under the family's guidance.

The temple held large landholdings before the land reforms and then fell into decline. A renovation committee was formed in 1971, the temple came under a trust in 1973, and since 1979 it has been managed directly by the Cochin Devaswom Board. An Ayurveda dispensary opened in the temple in 2006, and murals were painted in the sanctum in 2023.
